Shade Bedding Plants

In our Southern California climate, it is best to wait until cooler weather in mid to late October to start these Fall and Winter bedding plants for your shady areas. English primrose, Fairy primrose, Primrose Obconica and Cyclamen all provide beautiful winter color.

After all danger of frost has past, Spring and Summer bedding plants for shade will provide color in the shady or part shady areas of your garden. Begonia, Impatiens, New Guinea Impatiens, Torenia, Browalia, Hypoestes, Mimulus and Coleus give dramatic color in summer shade.

Sun Bedding Plants

For those sunny and partly sunny areas, these bedding plants will provide color from fall through winter. Plant these varieties beginning in October or when heat and winds have past: Pansy, Snapdragon, Iceland Poppy, Garden Mums, Linaria, Nemesia, Ranunculus, Anemone, Calendula, Stock, Sweet Pea, Violas.

After danger of frost has past (late March or April), begin planting these varieties for blooms through summer and fall in sunny areas: Ageratum, Alyssum, Aster, Celosia, Cosmos, Dahlias, Dianthus, Lisianthus, Lobelia, Marigolds, Petunia, Portulaca, Salvia, Verbena, Vinca, Zinnia.
