Clematis
April and May are the prime months for the Queen of the Vines, Clematis!
They are generally easy to grow, deciduous vines that produce
outrageously beautiful flowers in spring and into summer. Grow them on
trellises or provide support. There are compact growing varieties that
are great as container plants too!
Light requirements:
Clematis like about 5-6 hours of sun. In the
hottest areas they would prefer bright shade.
Planting instructions:
Clematis can be lightly rooted in their
containers so it's best to cut the container and gently remove the root
ball to avoid disruption to the root system.
Fertilizer:
Clematis love to be fed often, about every
4-6 weeks from the time they start to bud though September. The American
Clematis Society recommends Gro Power Flower 'n' Bloom.
Mulching:
A 3-4" mulch keeps the root zone cool, but
be careful to not place mulch about the stems which could cause stem
rot.
Water:
Water regularly, but do not keep them too
wet especially in the the winter months when they are dormant.
These are just a few of our favorite
Clematis varieties available during the season:
