MANDARIN/TANGERINE

 

ALGERIAN CLEMENTINE

A excellent early tangerine. Medium-sized fruit. Easy to peel. Rich, sweet, aromatic flavor with few seeds. Bright red-orange color.  Fruit holds well on tree. Bears December through April. It is noted that it produces heavier with Valencia Orange as a pollinator.

 

ALGERIAN FREMONT

Medium sized fruit. Bright orange-red rind and juice. Rich flavor. Easy to peel. Few to many seeds. Tends to bear heavily in alternate years. Bears February through May. Standard 12-15’, Semi-Dwarf 6-8’

 

DANCY

Fruit ripens December - April. Leading commercial variety. Very flavorful. Thin loose skin. Some seeds. Standard 12-15’, Semi-Dwarf 8-10’.

 

GOLD NUGGET

New UC Riverside introduction. Fruit ripens February – May or June. Holds very well on tree. Rich, sweet flavor. Seedless. Later season mandarin.

 

HONEY

Fruit ripens January - April. Very sweet. Easy to peel. Some seeds

Standard 12-15’, Semi-Dwarf 8-10’.

 

KARA

Cross between King and Satsuma. A late season mandarin with rich, tart-sweet flavor. Develops best flavor in inland California. Medium to large with deep orange rind.  Easy to peel. Can get puffy after maturity. Bears heavily in alternate years. Medium to large tree has a weeping, open habit.

 

KINNOW

Late-ripening variety. Juicy, aromatic, sweet flavor. Attractive tree with a compact, weeping habit. Tends to bear heavily in alternate years. Many seeds. Peels fairly easily. Standard 15-20’, Semi-Dwarf 8-12’.

 

KISHU MINI

Tiny, cute 1 ½ - 2” fruits. Fruit ripens late October to early November. Holds on tree until January. Easy to peel, thin rind. Sweet and mild flavor. Seedless. Early season mandarin.

Fruit bears February - May. Considered to be finest of the mandarins. Easy to peel. Nearly seedless. Standard to 12-15’, Semi-Dwarf 8-10’

 

PIXIE

Fruit bears March-June. True tangerine flavor. No seeds.

Good late season tangerine. Standard 15-18’, Semi-Dwarf 8-10’

 

PONKAN

Most popular variety in China. Mild, subacid flavor. Very large light orange fruit, dimpled and puckered, loose, baggy skin. Few seeds. Very sweet, excellent high quality flavor. Vigorous grower. Limited availability.

 

SATSUMA OWARI

Fruit bears December-April. Excellent, delicate, sweet mandarin flavor. Easy to peel. No seeds. Standard 12-15’, Semi-Dwarf 8-10’

 

YOSEMITE GOLD

A 2002 mandarin variety from UC Riverside. Vigorous grower, somewhat spreading form. It is a hybrid between Temple Tangor and Dancy x Encore. Dark orange rind, relatively thin. Seedless, finely textured, rich and juicy. January to mid-March ripening season, fruit holds well on tree until April.
